[God] will render to each one
according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory
and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; (Romans 2:6-7 ESV)
... But I am of the flesh, sold
under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want,
but I do the very thing I hate … I know that nothing good dwells in me, that
is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability
to carry it out. (7:14-15 and 18)
Therefore, God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could
not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he
condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law
might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to
the Spirit … For if you live
according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the
deeds of the body, you will live. (8:3-4 and 13)
